New Club President

At a recent Committee Meeting our Chairman made the proposal that David Taylor be offered the position of President of our Club.

His bowling skills and many  achievements on the bowling green were cited as good reasons, but above all, the proposal recognised the many things that David has done for the Club over many years of membership, and I must say is continuing to do .

The Committee were unanimous in supporting Barry's proposal.

Barry has subsequently contacted David and we are delighted that he has accepted with the appointment effective immediately.

I am sure you will all join the committee in wishing David all the best in his new role

Stables Lane Car Park re-surfacing and other matters

You all should be aware that the Car park we use at the Community park is to be resurfaced, I bet you are all saying about time !

The downside is the work will take some two weeks to complete and is scheduled to start on the 15th April 2024.

You will just have to accept short term pain for long term gain.

They plan to mark out parking spaces which should mean more cars being able to be parked.

On another issue Peter Wood asks me to remind you that there are still places on our lottery He will accept Cheques or Cash!

You are probably aware that that we have lost some 12 playing members this year mostly due to those members no longer playing.

This loss increases the pressure on finances and therefore the need to recruit new members

We will be proposing a new initiative shortly which we will need all members to support and participate in. More on this at a later date.

We will of course still have our open day on the Sunday of the Village Festival and again we are being asked to build a scarecrow.

Anybody interested please contact Geoff.

The theme is all creatures great and small which offers a very wide brief.

Bowling Club Recruitment Drive

THE STATE OF THE NATION OR MORE PRECISELY BOSTON SPA BOWLING CLUB

A message from your Chairman Barry

As you are aware the Club is financially sound and holds an image district wide as somewhere visiting players look forward to playing. The Club has an excellent green, an extended and attractive Pavilion, an informative new website and we have a 3 year improvement programme. In addition we are well  sited in the delightful new Community Park, in Stables Lane in the heart of the village.

…. We are indeed fortunate.

We are actively seeking new members as we have lost several members in the last year.

I highlight them because, boy do we need their like. If we project ourselves forward 3-4 years the average age of our club members will be around 80.

This statistic is worrying for both the competitive element of our Club and indeed its actual existence. I am inclined to exaggerate for effect but make no mistake this is no exaggeration.

Your Committee is very concerned about the Club’s very existence in the medium term. Much discussion is taking place but we need YOUR HELP.!

To that end it is imperative that we make a concerted effort to attract younger members – say 55 to 65 years old !! And of course youngsters of all ages from 10 upwards would be a real bonus.

So what can we do ? Well this is where YOU come in .

We need a real  effort from all members to promote  the game to neighbours, friends, family and acquaintances who may be members of other clubs such as pilates, dance, tennis and  golf clubs which prove to be fertile hunting grounds for budding bowlers.

Geoff Shaw is coordinating our membership drive and has produced a flyer which I attach HERE

The idea is that you can circulate this  to people you know who may be potential members and which could  supplement your face to face chats with them.

If each playing member contacts 5 people we have a potential 300 recruits!

If we could recruit 10 new members from this campaign we would deem it a great success particularly if they were from the younger age bracket.

If you are unable to print the flyer and would like copies please contact Geoff or pick up one from the Club. In addition the flyer can be found on our website.

Good luck, the future of the Club may well be in your hands.

Anyone interested only has to contact me or Geoff and we will sort it.

Thank you all in anticipation

Regards

Barry

Club Maintenance volunteers.

Every year we maintain our own club buildings and surrounds, and we are always looking to members coming along and helping with all the various jobs that need doing around the green.

These jobs are many and varied and to do them we need volunteers to go on a rota, with a few special projects on an ad-hoc basis.

Each new year we start a weekly rota and try to spread out the load as fairly as possible among the volunteers.

Every year we are looking for three people each week to clear gutters, cut the grass on the verges (but not the green, that’s for the Green Keeper to do), hedge trimming, and do general clearing up and odd tasks as required.

We have some volunteers from this year who we hope to keep for next year, but are looking to swell those numbers with some new ones.

If you wish to help the club in these essential tasks, then please let me know. I can then have you put on the rota for next year. Hopefully if we get enough volunteers, it may only be every 4-5 weeks that you would be required.

Your reward? Free tea and biscuit, and usually a bit of a chat, meet other members who you may not know, but most of all, contributing to a well maintained club.

If you have any specific skills (Carpenter, Painter etc) could you let us know, as we may be able to take advantage of those skills.

I hope to hear from many of you.

The maintenance day is Tuesdays from around 9:30am onwards.
